My interests in (or should I say, "my obsession with") photography began during seventh grade when I took a graphic arts class and was introduced to what was then the "chemical" process of photography in the "darkroom." Not long after I read Ansel Adams' series, starting with "Camera and Lens: The Creative Approach." His philosophy and methodology had a profound impact on me. The teaching and inspiration, which instilled in me a deep passion for the art of photography, I largely credit with keeping me out of (serious) trouble during my teen years. It is certainly the wish and the blessing of every parent that their young charge find something constructive to occupy his or her time during those formative years. My interest in and passion for photography was just such a blessing.
In the early eighties I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the UCLA Film School and earned a BA degree (Magna Cum Laude) from that institution. I received a post-graduate (JD) degree from Loyola Law School and worked in law for over two decades before returning to photography.
I continue to enjoy working with the view camera for certain subject matter and exposing and processing that stuff called "film." However, advances in the digital realm have been nothing short of revolutionary to the art and craft of photography. I embrace the new technology and am grateful for the freedom gained both in capture and expressive control of the image.
Different applications call for different tools and digital capture with an SLR camera is the preeminent choice when it comes to wedding, event and sports photography. My first Nikon was an "F" which was bought new in 1971. Since then I continue to use Nikon equipment for my wedding and event photography.
My style is portrait journalism with the emphasis on journalism. I take great pleasure in capturing the moment and the emotion. Much of what I saw in the law focused on the negative aspects of human character and emotion. Now, I find myself witness to the most joyous and treasured moments of human existence. There can be no greater honor nor more fulfilling work than this.
Yours very truly,
Robert Kirk
